We sailed overnight to Carriacou and went ashore
to check in and found the customs office was closed but we were
assured by a
taxi driver there would be no problem to go and
have lunch and then come back to the office later. If no one was there
then he would take us to the official's house. The
cab driver took us to "John's Unique" restaurant where we
had a good island lunch and started on our daily fare of
callalou soup
which we became quite addicted to while we were visiting in the islands.
For years I have heard from my friend, Eloise Rochester how good callalou
soup is; boy is she right. Both the pumpkin soup of the islands and
the callalou are delicious. It is hard to decide which to order when
both are available.
On our return trip to Carriacou Charlie and I discovered "The
Callalou Restaurant" which is right on the beach. We went there
several times and enjoyed the beautiful waitress as well as the delicious
food.
We set up a tour of the
island for the
next day and saw the sights which consist mostly of beautiful views
of the ocean, palm trees swaying in the breezes, lots of cute children,
) too many dogs,
and multiple vendors set up to sell
you things. The water is lovely and Carriacou is a very laid back
place, definitely off the beaten track.
Charlie and I returned to Carriacou after Stu and Julie left in Grenada.
They were having "Carnival" which consisted mostly of some
very disorganized parades, lots of loud music and lots of drunk revelers.
There are beautiful faces and when you pull out a Polaroid Camera
and offer photos you always get a lot of interest. We took some plastic
bins I wanted to get off the boat to the vegetable vendor and she
really appreciated them. Beautiful children on a beautiful island
leading lives so different from the ones we know in the USA. From
Carriacou we will go on to Grenada. Until Grenada . . .
